Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

One of the last of the manly men that plunged into the NHL fray without the safety of a helmet and certainly not afraid to drop the mitts, Bob Nystrom would spend his entire 14-season career in the Big Apple with the Islanders, and he’s best remembered for scoring the 1980 Stanley Cup-winning goal in overtime, in Game 6. The Swedish native would win four Stanley Cup championships with New York, with the club retiring the star’s number as well as creating the Bob Nystrom Award in 1991, presented annually to the Islander "who best exemplifies leadership, hustle, and dedication." This New York Islanders jersey was worn by Nystrom during the 1984-85 campaign and it’s been photo-matched to his tilt with George McPhee of the New York Rangers on February 7th, 1985. A Pedersons size XL label sits inside the inner collar, displaying a hand written “23” in black ink over it while “Pedersons” has been embroidered into the rear hem of the heavy mesh garment. Featuring a classic Islanders crest over the front in layered tackle twill, the sleeves and verso have been decorated with Nystrom’s number “23” in blue-over-orange tackle twill, with “Nystrom” spelt out across the top of the back in single layer blue twill letters on the affixed matching nameplate. Of note, the nameplate is not original to the jersey and is a replacement from another jersey as the one currently on the jersey is shorter than the one in the photo-match.
Exhibiting good game-use, the front, sleeves and reverse of the jersey are riddled with dark stick marks with board burns, stains and small unrepaired holes also observed. Sporting custom shortened sleeves, most of the stitching has let go. A gorgeous, long team repair is seen on the reverse of the jersey, starting between the numbers and going down to almost the blue hem stripe, that resulted in the fight strap being crudely reattached in a reverse manner. Regarding the aforementioned photo-match, the jersey is matched with Getty #52479200 (February 7th, 1985 vs New York) to the misaligned stripes on the lower right hem and to partially washed-out black mark in the lower white stripe of the right sleeve to the left of the orange elbow reinforcement threads. An LOA will accompany the piece.
