Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022

One of the nicest 1951-52 Jean Beliveau cards to have ever been submitted to PSA for assessment is what we have the pleasure of offering here, with the image of Beliveau putting on the brakes bringing forth the story of how the young star put the brakes on the Montreal Canadiens' plans back in the day, deciding not to join the Habs but remain in Quebec City and play for the senior Aces after his two years of junior hockey with the Citadels. The mention of big Jean as the scoring champion on the front of the blank-backed card sheds some light about the release date of the little cards, known over the years as "Laval Dairy" but actually produced by Bedard & Donaldson. The "Courtoisie Laiterie Laval" on the bottom front here (Courtesy Laval Dairy) likely contributed to the notion that the dairy issued the cards. We know from speaking with Mr. Beliveau years ago that he endorsed Laval Dairy products and was given a big stack of his own card to hand out - interesting. Difficult to find in high grade due in part to the card being the first numbered in the 109-card set, this nice “white” example boasts sharp corners and smooth edges among its appealing attributes, with its inviting mark of NM-MT 8 only equaled by four others and edged by a single MINT 9 copy, out of the 45 total submissions since PSA started up. An awesome acquisition this beauty Beliveau will be.
A one-inch horizontal scratch (through the flying snow), along with other light subtle scratches to the front of the PSA holder are to be aware of.
