Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024

Known for using Titan TPM2020 model sticks during his time with the Edmonton Oilers in which he led to a quartet of Stanley Cup championships and took the game by storm, breaking and setting records seemingly every night that he played, offered here is this Titan made TPM2020 model twig signed by "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky. A vintage period correct Gretzky model stick that hails from the mid-1980s, a "W. Gretzky" name stamp is found over the upper shaft while a foil accent sticker is found wrapped around the shafts lower portion. Having never been taped and remaining in excellent condition overall with just some marks found throughout from handling and age, Gretzky has signed over the forehand side of the blade with a fine blue marker ink signature that displays beautifully, with minimal fading observed from age. Having added an inscription reading "To Derek, In Friendship" in matching ink that presents in the same condition, a "1984" year annotation has been added to the bottom of the toe, also in blue marker ink, but it is unclear as to whether it was added by Gretzky or someone else. Overall, a fantastic early career signature from the game's greatest player!
Obtained by our consignor and father, who in the early-1980s was a thoroughbred horse trainer and friends with a few of the players on the Oilers roster, training horses for the likes of Craig McTavish, Glen Anderson and even Wayne Gretzky's agent at the time, Mike Barnett, he and his dad had the privilege of meeting most of the team after games in Edmonton and attending certain events that the players were at. Over time, the pairing met Wayne Gretzky on a number of occasions and "The Great One" graciously gave him and his dad the stick offered here that was signed by him and held onto by the pair for over 35 years.
