Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2022
The most desirable duo in history one could possibly hope to find on any vintage baseball, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were teammates in pinstripes for a dozen historic seasons – arguably the best era for the Bronx Bombers – and while Ruth balls surface with frequency, sphere’s signed by the paramount pair are especially tough to locate, with the surviving supply miniscule in comparison. This seldom-seen Spalding Official League Special baseball has been signed by the iconic legends. Featuring red and grey stitching, the ball sports fairly bold Spalding stampings including “Official League Special”, “Cork Center” and “Made especially for Nat C. Strong” (Strong was an official in the National Association of Colored Baseball Clubs of the United States and Cuba, part owner of the Cuban Stars (East), and owner of the Brooklyn Royal Giants). Ruth and Gehrig have each signed in steel-tip fountain pen, with the Sultan taking his familiar ownership of the sweet spot, while the Iron Horse occupies the same panel and is positioned to the left. Both signatures are somewhat worn/faded but easily legible, with some general toning and minor discolouration to the ball. Accompanied by an LOA from JSA.
