The most collected team in baseball and traditionally the most successful, we offer a collection of New York Yankees programs, yearbooks, ticket stubs and other items from the career of New York sport's journalist Allen Abel. Highlighted by a June 8, 1969 "A Day to Remember" Sport Magazine Mickey Mantle retirement program along with two copies of the matching .45 record with sleeves, the lot also features a pair of Game 4 1978 Yankee Stadium World Series ticket stubs. The bulk of the lot contains Yankees yearbooks for 1967, 1969 (page torn), 1970, 1976, 1977, 1978 (with baseball card section intact) and 1980 (with intact poster), 13 late-1960s/early-1970s programs including a 1974 spring training program with Abel's Yankees pass stapled to the interior, a vintage 1970s Yankee Stadium bumper sticker, a 1960s Yankees pin and 1970s Billy Martin pin, a newspaper section heralding the opening of the "new" Yankee Stadium in 1976, and 52 misc Yankees ticket stubs - mostly from the 1970s, including an Opening Day stub from 1976 and a full ticket to the record-setting "3 grand slam home runs" on Aug 25, 2011 (heavy wear). The lot also contains Abel's 1970 Yankees Autograph Room ticket and signed 1978 Yankees NY Sheraton Hospitality pass.
Covering the world's greatest sporting endeavors for half a century which included serving for a decade on Capitol Hill and in the briefing room of the White House, longtime journalist, sports columnist, producer and on-air television correspondent Allen Abel has traveled to over one hundred countries, witnessing epic battles and accomplishments from the press box; from Ali vs Fraser, to the Miracle On Ice, the genesis of Gretzky, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Winning six National Magazine awards for political, travel and sports writing as a contributor to numerous publications including Sports Illustrated and Maclean's, Abel was also an on-air host, narrator, writer or producer on dozens of documentaries for HBO, Discovery, National Geographic, Hockey Night in Canada, the CBC and others. Abel has also authored a number of non-fiction works including 'The Short Life of Hughie McLoon — A True Story of Baseball, Magic, and Murder'
