Attending numerous Olympic Games in his role as a sport’s journalist, we offer Olympic items from the collection of Allen Abel, highlighted by participation medals from the 1976 Montreal, 1996 Atlanta (with case) 1998 Nagano (with sleeve) and 2000 Sydney Games (with case and outer box), with additional highlights to include Abel’s 1980 Olympic Press medal and opening and closing ceremony programs with the original ticket stubs affixed to the interior, Abel’s 1980 Olympic press embroidered crest and his 1988 Seoul Olympics press pass with photo. The breakdown by Olympiads is as follows; from the 1976 Games in Montreal, there are six ticket stubs, a button, a closing ceremonies announcement, Olympic Village press pass application and 15 different programs/books/pamphlets. From the 1980 Games in Salt Lake there is an event program, two small pins, a 1980 crest in the original packaging and a Parliament Hill Olympic pass addressed to Abel. From the 1988 Games in Seoul there is an Olympic Park menu, three bumper stickers, a schedule booklet and a set of postcards. Rounding out the lot, we have Abel’s 1979 Pan American Games press medal with ribbon and program – with ticket stub stapled to the interior of the program, a 1984 Olympics booklet, a postcard signed by Marina Navratilova, a few additional booklets and a number of souvenir Olympic pins.
Covering the world's greatest sporting endeavors for half a century which included serving for a decade on Capitol Hill and in the briefing room of the White House, longtime journalist, sports columnist, producer and on-air television correspondent Allen Abel has traveled to over one hundred countries, witnessing epic battles and accomplishments from the press box; from Ali vs Fraser, to the Miracle On Ice, the genesis of Gretzky, to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Winning six National Magazine awards for political, travel and sports writing as a contributor to numerous publications including Sports Illustrated and Maclean's, Abel was also an on-air host, narrator, writer or producer on dozens of documentaries for HBO, Discovery, National Geographic, Hockey Night in Canada, the CBC and others. Abel has also authored a number of non-fiction works including 'The Short Life of Hughie McLoon — A True Story of Baseball, Magic, and Murder'
