Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/20/2024
Lovers of unopened material will have their interest piqued to elevated heights by this mesmerizing and thought-provoking box of hockey card packs from 1985-86, the season that collectors first saw a budding teenage superstar by the name of Mario Lemieux appear on O-Pee-Chee cards. Upon the young phenom’s 100-point rookie campaign, (a season earlier), the Penguins’ fortune began to rise and thanks to Mario’s prolific performances in ensuing years, Pittsburgh won back-to-back Stanley Cups, helping to propel ‘85-86 O-Pee-Chee cards of the Montreal native to coveted status. Featuring a total of 45 unopened packs on its interior of this inviting box that each contain seven (7) cards, Al MacInnis’ rookie card, four different cards of Gretzky, a Lemieux League Leader card and a card issued following Pelle Lindbergh’s death are among those involved in OPC’s 264-card effort. Box bottom cards first appeared in '85-86, with the panel here picturing Ruotsalainen, Sutter, Tonelli and Wilson. Not contained within any cellophane wrapping, inspection of the box revealed that forty-five (45) of the forty-eight (48) packs contained on the interior are still unopened while one (1) pack was opened and two (2) packs are unglued. Additionally, the box and its contents have been shown to and reviewed by a third-party that specializes packs/boxes and all other packs looked fine and not tampered with but the box and packs are offered ''AS IS'' and therefore no returns will be accepted.
With the tape obviously no longer intact over the front edge, the box shows surface wear to all four (4) sides as well as the top and bottom with the fold up display lid partially perforated as well. Showing some creasing to all four (4) sides as well, additional wear worth noting is found in the form of light-to-moderate edge and corner wear to the top and bottom of the box including a ding at the bottom left front corner. Lastly, a very tiny tear is seen at the front edge of the right side. Overall, the prospect of a high grade Mario RC….or two!, overwhelmingly trumps it all.
