Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/14/2022
The National Hockey League’s fourth annual Winter Classic in 2011 pitted Alex Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals against Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins in front of 68,111 fans who packed Heinz Field in the Steel City as the visiting Capitals defeated the hometown Pens by a score of 3-1 in the first New Years Day contest played under the lights in primetime. From that game, we have this Caps jersey issued to Tom Poti for use during the first period. A size “58” flag tag is affixed to the inner collar below a “Winter Classic January 1st 2011” designation while the logos of Reebok and the NHL decorate the front and back neckline respectively. The front is styled with a Capitals team crest while the all important 2011 Winter Classic patch resides over the right shoulder. Poti’s number “3” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in dual-layer tackle twill. The front and sleeves also exhibit alternating red and blue stars running above the crest and down the arms. Issued but never worn, the jersey remains in beautiful condition. A MeiGray patch numbered “H06111” is found on the inner hem and according to the company’s population report, the jersey is a “White Retro Winter Classic GI - Period 1” specimen. An LOA from the NHL will accompany.
