Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/20/2022
While most hockey historians and collectors are well aware of the Howie Morenz memorial game that took place at the Montreal Forum after the legend passed, along with this desirable program issued for the event of which we have sold many, it is not common knowledge that the Montreal Canadiens first honoured the fallen hero with a trip to the east coast for a series of exhibition games against eastern all-stars, concluding in Moncton on April 13, 1937, with 10-year-old Howie Morenz Jr taking part in the match and scoring a goal! We offer an excruciatingly rare program from the April 13, 1937 Morenz memorial game played at Moncton Stadium. At 8 1/2" x 11", the four-page program features a drawing of Morenz and son on the cover taken from an original photo, along with the date and venue, with the center section exhibiting the line-up, which included Cude, Siebert, Blake and Lepine for the Habs, and past members of the Allan Cup-champion Moncton Hawks including McManus, Miller, Gill and Irvine for the all-stars. While the program shows heavy wear throughout including creasing, toning and staining, there is also a name written to the cover in pencil, along with a piece of clear tape added to the inside back cover. This is the ONLY example of this utterly rare prize that we have ever offered.
