Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Transitioning from the AHL to the WHA upon the inception of the rebel league, backstopping the Cleveland Crusaders in over 20 games in each of his four seasons with the club, Bob Whidden wore this highly desirable photo-matched mask during his time in the World Hockey Association with Cleveland, in 1972-73. At approx 10 ¾” from the top of the reverse to the bottom of the chin, the mask features a silver sunburst design with metal flake, with no design to the backplate – common to the era. The strapping appears original, with each of the interior pads intact. Heavy game-use is shown with surface wear throughout including chipping and blemishes, with some of the surface paint worn away over the underside chin. The strapping and interior padding also shows considerable wear. The mask has been matched to a number of images which show the exact placement of the holes in correlation with the paint job, and to the slightly angled mouth hole.
