Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
An expansion team that began play in 1972 as part of an effort to keep up with the newly formed rival World Hockey Association, the Atlanta Flames would last a total of eight seasons in the National Hockey League before being relocated to Calgary for the 1980-81 season where they still remain to this day under the name of the Flames. Hailing from original designer Bob Wages, is this unique three-piece lot based around the Atlanta Flames logo design process and story that also includes a hand done sketch of the now nostalgia-inducing flaming “A”. Featuring a letter from Wages detailing the process of design as well as what the logo was meant to capture and how up to that point Wages had never seen a hockey game, the handwritten note is captured on 8 ½” x 11” letterhead that features the Flames logo at the top. Condition wise there are no flaws whatsoever and the penmanship remains bold and legible. Also included in the lot is a hand done sketch of the Flames logo that has been done in thin black marker on thin sketch paper. Coming in at dimensions of 11 ½” x 9”, the piece displays well with no issues and has been signed in the lower right-hand corner by the artist. Lastly, a photograph of the actual original logo drawing is included with a sticky note from Wages identifying it as such. Overall, an excellent piece of hockey history that would make any logo and uniform enthusiast happy to have in their collection.
