Addendum; we have received information that the Flames would have also worn Airknit jerseys in the 1987-88 preseason so therefore this jersey wasn’t worn in the 1987-88 preseason as originally listed by Mike Bullard. The jersey would have been worn by Richard Kromm in the mid-1980s and most likely the jersey would have been put together by the team as a Mike Bullard to sell it afterwards explaining why there is an airknit nameplate on a mesh jersey.
The front of the jersey features the white flaming “C” that is the flames logo while the sleeves and verso of the sweater feature number “22” in dual layer stacked white and yellow twill while the upper back features “Bullard” in a similar style spelt out across a red airknit nameplate. A treat for jersey collectors is found on the left shoulder in the form of the Calgary 88 Olympics patch that Flames wore the season leading up to the games. The details of the jersey become a bit foggy as the mesh style present with the CCM hem patch was only worn for a season and a half by the Flames in late 1983-84 and throughout 1984-85. Research indicates that Richard Kromm wore number “22” while this style of jersey was worn and there is slight indication on the inside of a nameplate change in the form of loose threads. Of note is the fact that 1987-88 saw the Flames wear airknit jerseys for the first time. A cloth ribbon style fight strap is also present inside the jersey. The jersey itself is riddled with game wear and team repairs throughout! A quick count shows at least 13 team repairs with numerous places still being unrepaired such as a hole near the collar. Additionally, a ton of stick and puck marks are present as well as board burns and paint transfer. The first back number “2” also features wear and has come away in spots. Overall, an absolutely beautiful piece that would be able to tell so many stories if it could talk!
