Retiring after just 10 NHL seasons due to injury, Steve Payne was selected by Minnesota in 1978 and spent his entire career with the club. The Toronto native also represented Canada at the 1979 World Championships and 1981 Canada Cup, and was an NHL All-Star in 1980 and 1985. From the mid-1980s, we have a North Stars jersey worn by Payne in either 1984-85 or 1985-86. Steichens labeling is affixed to the collar along with a faded laundering tag, with the jersey measuring-out to a size 54, with Steichens and CCM* crests over the reverse hem. Styled with the classic North Stars pointed-N team crest, “44” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in drop-shadow tackle twill, with “Payne” across the affixed nameplate in single green twill. The jersey also sports a tie-up fight strap. Likely framed at some point, the tackle twill identifiers over the front all show heavy fading, with lighter fading to the reverse. We should also note that the hem was custom-shortened. Game-use includes marks to the material as well as scrapes and burns along with numerous team repairs visible, with examples situated on the front (3, including a single repair to the team crest), reverse (5, including a large 6” repair), shoulders (3) and sleeves (4).
