The Conn Smythe Trophy winner in just his second full NHL season in 1968-69, Serge Savard is a four-time All-Star, serving as Montreal Canadiens captain for two seasons (1979-81). The Senator would star on the Habs backline for a decade and a half, and would be a part of eight Stanley Cup titles. From his final championship, a season that also garnered the Bill Masterton Trophy, we have a photo-matched Canadiens captain's jersey worn by the star blueliner during the 1979 playoffs and Stanley Cup final. Maska Superfil labeling along with a laundering tag is affixed to the collar, with the jersey measuring-out to roughly a size 52. Featuring the most famous team crest in hockey history in tackle twill, "18" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material. There is also embroidered Maska logos to the front and reverse hems, with the garter-style fight strap intact. Sporting a cream-coloured nameplate, this particular set of home jerseys were worn by the Habs in the 1978-79 playoffs and early on in the following season. Hammered with use, there are marks, scuffs and stains throughout and considerable red paint transfer to the sleeves, with a few unrepaired holes/slits to the left sleeve. Team repairs are plentiful, with examples situated on the front (6), reverse (2), shoulders (5) and sleeves (23). There is also some pilling to the interior. Photo-matched to the Stanley Cup clinching game, Getty Images #1253311621 and #1253311653 (May 21st 1979 - Game 5 Stanley Cup Finals) have been matched to the reddish mark above the "8" on the left sleeve, and to a few now mostly washed-out marks on the sleeve and shoulder, while Getty Image #173186359 (May 21st 1979 - Game 5 Stanley Cup Finals) has been matched to the loose white thread going through the top blue portion of the team crest, and to other characteristics of the team crest. Additionally, Getty Image #1253182351 (undated but attributed to 1978-79 playoffs as jersey not showing a lot of wear) has been matched to the loose white thread going through the top blue portion of the team crest and to other characteristics of the team crest. This important jersey will be accompanied by an LOA from Classic Auctions. Addendum; the nameplate on the jersey is the one which was affixed by the team for the next season, 1979-80, the 1978-79 nameplate was removed at the end of the season.
