Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Produced as a tribute to the game’s biggest star, sporting goods giant Spalding sold one-piece sticks in 1937 with the facsimile signature of icon and recently-deceased superstar Howie Morenz, with the desirable and seldom-found lumber advertised in the Howie Morenz memorial game program. We offer an example, with this just the second specimen we have ever offered. Full size, and not to be confused with the equally-rare Howie Morenz Autograph model produced by Spalding over numerous seasons during the era, this model sports a bold “Howie Morenz” stamped to each side of the pinned blade, with the Spalding logo utilized throughout much of the 1930s in script on both sides of the shaft. The original striping accents from the lower shaft and tip of the blade are gone (outlines visible), with a few areas of additional outlines of former tape visible, including over the knob. Now exhibiting a rich even tone throughout the length of the shaft and blade, there is wear to the underside of the blade including a large chip, with the stick remaining solid and displaying nicely overall. This is one of the most highly sought vintage sticks in the hobby.
