Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Referred to by collectors as Cowan Tiles, these 6” x 6” ceramic affairs were reportedly meant to be sold at NHL arenas, but speculation is that licensing issues led to them never being released to the public, and despite most apparently being destroyed, a fairly large number have survived. Over 100 different players exist, with “SCREENART PRODUCTS LTD. – Made in Canada” appearing on the cork backing of each along with an attached grommet for hanging. “H.M. Cowan”, thought to be the artist’s name, joins the colourful images. This lot features 10 tiles in their original boxes including 7 that are signed. First, for the signed tiles, we have Gump Worsley (signed in black marker, smudge to sig, name written to box), Andy Bathgate (signed in dark blue marker, name written to box), Lou Fontinato (2, both signed in black marker), Don Marshall (signed in black marker, name written to box), Jerry Toppazzini (signed in dark blue marker, names written to box) and Phil Goyette (signed in black marker, name written to the box), while the unsigned tiles include Muzz Patrick (3, writing and spotting to each box). An empty box with “Talbot” handwritten will also accompany.
