Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Fall 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/21/2022
The first leader of the NDP, Tommy Douglas served as an elected member of the House of Commons in 1935, later becoming Saskatchewan Premier in 1944 after a landslide victory. Forming the first socialist government in North America, the universal healthcare system implemented by Douglas was eventually adopted by the Federal Government. On House of Commons letterhead, we have a typed letter signed by Douglas, accompanied by a signed cut executed while the Premier of Saskatchewan in 1960. First, the 8 1/2" x 11" letter is dated August 26, 1977, with the content mentioning the gifting of two signed items by Douglas. The dark ink signature displays beautifully, with no issues for the letter itself. The cut is 2 3/4" x 4 1/2", with Douglas signing in blue ballpoint, adding "Prime Minister of Saskatchewan" and "Sept 13th 1960", with the reverse showing what appears to be an additional Douglas signature, with some of the writing covered with paper residue as the cut was removed from a scrapbook. An LOA from Classic Auctions will accompany.
