Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
A privilege for the British who belonged to one of four classes including Members of Parliament, a free frank allowed these individuals to send envelopes without having to pay postage along as the envelope was signed. Beginning in the mid-1650s, the practice ended in 1840. We offer a post free frank envelope from 1864 signed by British-Canadian journalist, politician and Father of Confederation George Brown, addressed to his wife, "Mrs. George Brown" (essentially a second signature). At 3" x 5", Brown has signed the lower left, with postage stampings to the front and reverse including one dated "Oc 13 64". The black fountain pen signatures display well, with the envelope exhibiting toning and a bit of staining to the reverse.
