Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Sporting the design aesthetics stereotypical to the 19th century, we have a trio of antique skate pairs including models with extremely large and desirable curling-tip blades as well as specimens with much of the original red paint – a folk art collectors dream! Included, we have mid-19th century models with no maker’s marks, with hand-carved wooden bases and especially large curling-tip blades, with the hammering and shaping of the blades done by a blacksmith visible. There is surface wear to the wide blades and platforms, but no obtrusive damage and no remaining hardware. Next, we have a pair with no maker’s marks and wooden bases, with uniquely shaped loop-cut of scalloped stanchions, with much of the original deep red paint over the bases and top of the blades. The rare pair shows heavy wear throughout including considerable pitting to the blades. Lastly, we have a pair with deep brown wooden bases and curled-tip blades, with brass bell-shaped stanchions and additional brass hardware/strapping guides. The maker “W.A. Johnson” is branded into each base along with “Auburn, NY”, a patent date of “June 9 63” and listed size of “10”. The pair shows surface wear from use but no damage. Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection, with this the second offering from the vast and comprehensive grouping.
