Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
The first trading card set featuring members of the then newly-formed American Football League coincided with the league's first season and included players of the loop's eight teams; the New York Titans, Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills and the Houston Oilers comprised the Eastern Division while the Western Division had the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Texans. Just about all cards in the set (119 of 132) are considered rookie cards, with Jack Kemp and Ron Mix leading the RC lineup and the examples here VG-EX+ and VG+ respectively, the latter displaying superior characteristics but technically lowered by a tiny crease near the bottom right corner. The card of legend George Blanda (VG-EX) and those of coaches Sammy Baugh (EX-MT) and Hank Stram (RC)(VG+) are other notable contributors. Combining for a majority among the rest are VG+, VG-EX and EX examples, with EX+ and EX-MT entries also to come upon, along with 28 creased cards that are mostly VG, with some lesser lights present. A dozen miscut cards are also to note. All in all, a colorful and historic set for football historians and collectors of vintage cards to consider, this batch will entertain and provide enjoyment when it arrives.
