Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
The most important signature in any advanced hockey collection, while items signed by Lord Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, and the donator of North America’s most prestigious and oldest trophy do surface, images signed by the legendary politician are almost non-existent. This utterly scarce antique postcard has been signed by the namesake of the Stanley Cup. Just the third matching Lord Stanley postcard we have ever offered, with the previous examples lacking autographs, this utterly rare specimen was signed just weeks before the Ottawa Silver Seven defended their Stanley Cup title against Dawson City, in February of 1905. At the standard 3 ½” x 5 ½”, Stanley is pictured in a dapper suit, with “Earl of Derby” over the base. The postal reverse remains clean and unused, with a few small pencil notations. Stanley has placed a fountain pen signature over the bottom right, signing as “Derby”, adding “Dec 1905”. The postcard itself exhibits minor silvering to the image and light toning to the reverse, with touches to a few corners.
