Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Defeated by the eventual Stanley Cup finalist Toronto Maple Leafs during the first round of the 1939 Stanley Cup playoffs, the New York Americans would be led by Sweeney Schriner’s team-leading 44 points, along with the 19 goals posted by Lorne Carr in 47 regular-season games. We have a rare real photo postcard of the 1938-39 New York Americans, featuring HOFers Nels Stewart, Hooley Smith, Sweeney Schriner and coach Red Dutton. Smaller than the standard 3 ½” x 5 ½” postcards from the era and measuring roughly 3 3/16” x 5 7 /16”, the full team is pictured in uniform and on-ice, with a blank reverse. The names of the players are written on verso in fountain pen, with residue left from scrapbook removal over each corner as well as numerous surface wrinkles, along with toning and a dime-sized indentation over the lower right.
