Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
An elegant feature reminiscent of a bygone era where design aesthetics heavily outweighed basic function, curled-tip skate blades are evocative of the 19th century, with the desirable trait featured in this group of 4 pairs of antique skates. Included, the first pair appear handmade and are likely American with Dutch influence and sport a charming appearance with blonde wooden bases and semi-circle blade terminations, with no maker’s marks or remaining strapping, with heavy pitting to the blades. The second pair are also likely American but with German influence, with dark finished wooden bases and semi-circle blade terminations, with no maker’s marks and heavy wear, with all of the front strapping remaining on each. Next, we have an early pair with no maker’s marks and wooden bases, with the curled tip blades terminating in a unique, Viking ship reverse-prow style, with heavy wear to the blades including pitting, with some of the leather strapping remaining for each. The final pair have extended curling tip blades and finished bases, with some of the original paint visible, with no maker’s marks and most of the heavy tackle strapping. The blades and bases show heavy wear, with one base sporting cracks. Please note that each antique skate lot in our current auction hails from an advanced 19th century skate collection.
