Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Our consignor’s interesting group of less-common Wayne Gretzky collectibles includes this nifty, likely unique piece, with Wayne and five of his fellow Hall of Fame Edmonton Oiler teammates and their scoring statistics from the 1980-81 season (Wayne’s second NHL campaign) listed on the back of the ’81-82 Topps card. That’s where an early Gretz autograph appears in blue ink, with the young superstar adding his famous number “99”. Encapsulated by Beckett, with “JSA” and “AUTHENTIC” appearing on the label, the Oilers team leaders card exhibits light touches/wear at the four corners but no creases, although a little indentation is observed to the right of “Topps”. Gretzky broke Bobby Orr’s single-season assist record of 102 by setting up or being in on 109 goals in ’80-81, with the stats of Messier, Kurri, Coffey, Anderson and Lowe also fun to check out. It’s amusing to see (on the front) that Lee Fogolin tied Wayne with four short-handed goals. A scratch-free Beckett holder is also to note.
