Founded by Joseph Henry Ferodowill, with the earliest mention of the company in The Blacksmith & Wheelwright Magazine of January, 1903, the Ferodowill Mfg Co was based in St Paul, Minnesota, and produced a double clamp vice Universal Skate Sharpener that was first patented in 1917, and we offer an example. An ad for the Ferodowill Mfg Co in Popular Mechanics from 1927 states, “Skate Grinding Holders – As used for lengthwise and cross sharpening of skates” and “The original makers of skate grinding holders”, with prices listed of $3.50 and $5.00. At approx 8” x 13” when laying flat, the patent dates of Jan 23 and Mar 27 1917 are cast along with the company name and location, with the device featuring two large circular clamps, with each moveable/adjustable and in working order. There is also a serial number, with the sharpener quite heavy, with a century of surface wear present but no visible damage.
