Playing home games in the newly constructed Joe Louis Arena, the Detroit Red Wings finished in the basement of the Norris Division in 1979-80, with Dale McCourt leading the club in scoring and serving as team captain. This Red Wings jersey is attributed to have been worn in 1979-80 by either or both of Dennis Sobchuk (played 33 games) and Alex Pirus (played 4 games). It is also possible the jersey could have been recycled in some capacity for the following season in which Mike Blaidell (played 32 games) and Mal Davis (played 5 games) also wore the #14. Stall & Dean labeling along with laundering, size "50" and year "9" tags are affixed to the collar, with "8" handwritten to the label. There is also an Olympic label on the inside hem and a garter-style fight strap on the vintage garment. Styled with the classic fully-embroidered winged-wheel Red Wings team crest over the chest, "14" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in single white twill, with evidence of at least one former nameplate on the upper reverse and what seems to be outlines of letters in the middle of where the nameplate would have been. Exhibiting nice use with marks over the front band, there are also unrepaired holes over each sleeve and the lower reverse, with puckering to the reverse numbers, especially the "1", with this repeated over the right sleeve. It must be noted that the number "4" on the back doesn't exhibit as much wear/puckering as the other numbers and appears whiter.
