Lovers of 1964-65 Topps cards always love checking out and hearing about complete sets, with plenty of lovely gloss and interesting/important elements to tell you about here in this pieced-together ensemble, with mid-to-high grade examples dominating. The #1-Pit Martin rookie/first card is definitely one of the nicest raw examples we recall handling, its impressive immaculate front joined by a lightly touched back corner and a couple of tiny white back edge specks (to the right of the cartoon when viewing the reverse) rendering things EX-MT+. Ten 1st Series cards (eight are commons) are affected by small ink marks along the top and/or bottom edges, for the most part only detectable when the cards are in a stack. Bobby Hull’s #20 SP is an exception; ink shows up in the bottom border of the otherwise EX+ entry, with EX or EX+ 1st Series notables including Hall (ink), Mikita, Beliveau SP and Richard SP, and Sawchuk (EX-MT) and Crozier RC (NM+) superior. Half a dozen lightly creased 1st Series cards are lowered to VG or (mostly) VG+, with both checklists unmarked; #54-1st Series is a crease-free EX+ beauty while 55-2nd Series is creased and G+. Alluring EX-MT to NM-or-better cards are to be discovered in both portions, with 59-Pilote, 72-Dornhoefer RC and 92-Paille RC best among the short prints at EX-MT. Horton All-Star SP is EX+ while Mikita AS SP is a crease-free VG-EX representative. All-Stars Hull (VG+) and Hall (VG) are also noteworthy. Light creasing sends SPs Villemure, Rousseau and Nesterenko to VG+, with the other (2nd Series) SPs either EX or EX+. An attractive, well-centered EX-MT-looking Gordie Howe card is technically lowered to VG+ by a tiny corner crease, only spotted on the back. We’ve pointed out the pertinent flaws but you’ll appreciate coming upon the superior cards. Offering all sorts of options are Tall Boy assemblies – we surmise you’ll be pleased to have scored this batch.
