Believed to have originated as a children’s game during the medieval period in England, the sport of cricket expanded with the prestige of the British Empire, and is chiefly followed in the United Kingdom, Australia, South Asia, southern Africa and the West Indies. We offer an antique 19th century cricket trophy from 1887-88, accompanied by a cricket “hat trick” trophy ball with base from 1962. At 10” in height at the tallest points, the trophy cup features embossed and chased metal work and floral engraving throughout, with attractive curling dragon handles. “Presented to CE Jones Esq-MLA by the Warrior CC Ballarat” is engraved to the front, with “Owen Challenge Cup - for Second-rate Juniors – Won by the Warrior Cricket Club – Season 1887-88” engraved to the reverse. There are also hallmarks stamped to the underside, with the trophy cup showing surface wear and oxidation throughout, with the bowl slightly bent on the stem. The trophy ball is a vintage red cricket ball awarded for a hat trick, achieved by the bowler taking three wickets in consecutive deliveries, with this especially rare in the sport as it has only occurred 43 times since 1879, in more than two-thousand Test matches in which national representative teams compete in matches of up to five days duration. The 3” black lacquer base with green felt underside to support the ball has an affixed silver plaque that reads, “P.K.O. Crosthwaite, Hat Trick v Chinthurst, July 14th 1962.” The ball shows shows wear, with marks and additional wear to the affixed plaque.
