Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
The “Miracle on Ice” U.S. Olympic team win over the powerful Soviet Union squad overshadowed the exciting hockey tournament that took place in Lake Placid in February, 1980. Pelle Lindbergh was 20 years old that winter as he helped Sweden win an Olympic bronze medal. Sweden was the only team the Americans were unable to beat during the tournament. In fact, only a goal in the dying seconds allowed Team U.S.A. to salvage a 2-2 tie against Sweden in the tournament opener. Sadly losing his life in a vehicle accident in November of 1985, this wonderful lot includes five of Lindbergh’s personal items of Lake Placid memorabilia, including his team-issued light brown sports bag. The two-foot long bag is about 11” wide and the original luggage tag is still attached, with the Stockholm address of Anna Lisa Lindbergh, the goalie’s mother, handwritten in black ink. The bag features the Swedish hockey team’s blue and yellow Lake Placid Olympic logo and the number 97 in blue ink on each side of the bag, and manufacturer Folksam in green on each end. Lindbergh’s blue athletes’ Lake Placid photo ID No. 129867 and his gorgeous participant’s medal in its original box are two of the highlights of this special lot. A glass souvenir labeled “Olympic Village” with the Lake Placid Olympics logo and two Lake Placid 1980 souvenir pins round out the collection, which was obtained directly from the Lindbergh family. This wonderful lot of Olympic memorabilia comes with a signed letter of authenticity.
