The Upper Deck Company changed the baseball card landscape with its inaugural 1989 issue and sure hit a grand slam by choosing future all-time great Ken Griffey Jr. to appear on card #1 of its first edition. The write-up on the back reads in part, “will probably begin the ’89 campaign at Triple-A Calgary,” but the young phenom never suited up there, instead starting his Major League career as a teenager, his all-around ability accounting for 16 home runs and 16 stolen in 127 games. Junior’s sweet swing later contributed to seven 40-or-more homer seasons in an eight year stretch and 630 roundtrippers altogether – baseball fans who watched his illustrious career feel privileged. A difficult-to-hope-for-nicer bold blue marker autograph enhances the offered rookie card, with Beckett confirming its perfectness with an autograph grade of “10.” The card itself is not assessed but is without obvious flaws; two touched corners are detected upon magnification. A wondrous addition to your collection this eye candy will be. *Difficult-to-describe small specks appear to be on the front of the Beckett holder and not the surface of the card.
