Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022

The first time the Games were staged in a Spanish-speaking country, the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City were also the first in Latin America, with the United States taking home the most gold medals. Featuring the torch relay recreating the route taken by Christopher Columbus to the New World, with American sculptor James Metcalf winning the commission to design the torch, we offer a highly desirable original example. A Type 2 torch, with five different types manufactured, this specimen is 17 ½” long and constructed of steel and leather, with the Type 2 torches originally made in both silver – like the offered example - and black. “Mexico 68” appears in metal work along the rim, with a piece of plastic added at the base – most likely to facilitate display, with black electric tape placed vertically over the handle. The torch was lit, with the interior showing evidence, with surface wear throughout along with the odd small ding or mark. We should also note that the different types of torches were made as the first produced were melting/exploding, and as such, “the Spanish Olympic Committee created a new type of torch, which seems to have been used only during official moments of the torch relay to avoid bad publicity and to prevent accidents among large crowds”
