Especially dominant in the years following the Second World War; winning five Stanley Cup championships in just seven seasons from 1945 to 1951, the Toronto Maple Leafs featured a powerhouse squad loaded with HOF talent which included Turk Broda, Teeder Kennedy, Harry Watson, Max Bentley and others. This beautiful Leafs wool sweater originates from the early-to-mid-1950s, and saw use from one or possibly more as three players wore the #18 sweater during the era including Bill Juzda (1951-1952), Leo Boivin (1953-1955) and Brian Cullen (1955-1957). A label from Leafs’ team supplier and fellow MLG resident Doug Laurie is affixed to the collar, with the vintage wool sweater measuring-out to roughly a modern size 48. Featuring the classic 35-point Leafs team crest constructed of thick white felt, “Toronto Maple Leafs” has been appliqued, with “18” over the verso in matching material, affixed with a zig-zag sewing pattern. Exhibiting considerable game-use with small holes over the lower front, additional examples grace the left sleeve, with a few large team repairs near the right elbow. Part of the “L” of “Maple” is missing from the team crest, and we should note further repairs visible over the shoulders, right seam and each armpit. Worn at the height of the Leafs’ most successful era, this Original Six wool will undoubtedly excite even the most advanced blue and white collectors.
