Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022

Well, not entirely high grade but mighty nice overall are these cards from Topps’ unique 1980-81 hockey card issue, with EX-MT and NM-or-better examples accounting for the vast majority and joined by small quantities of EX+-or-lower entries. For the uninformed, the players’ names on the front of the cards, as well as information on team and league leader cards, were covered in black and only visible after a coin or something else was rubbed over the blackened area. An ingenious idea perhaps, but not all that popular, with unscratched cards rather difficult to find in complete set form. With pleasing centering are the Ray Bourque and Mike Gartner rookie cards, both EX-MT in our book, with a bottom edge ding sending the off-centered second-year Wayne Gretzky card to EX+. A little bit bigger bottom edge push, plus a pinkish stain affects one of two leader cards featuring Wayne, but overall, you should enjoy these minimally handled 40-plus year old cards, their original gloss and unblemished surfaces a real treat to check out. The real decent rookie card roster also includes Goulet, Liut, Vaive, Propp, Craig, Nilsson, Foligno, Secord and still more, with unmarked checklists and team checklists to report. One wax pack wrapper is a neat throw-in, as are a dozen unscratched duplicates (Secord RC), and seven still-folded team poster inserts, with two Colorado Rockies team shots among the latter. A good time awaits the high bidder here.
