Leading the team in scoring with 87 points, Joe Sakic and the Colorado Avalanche concluded the 2003-04 NHL season in fourth place in the Western Conference, and after defeating Dallas in five, fell to the San Jose Sharks in the Conference Semifinals. This signed Avalanche captain’s jersey was worn by Sakic in 2003-04, specifically in the Jan 10, 2004 match vs Dallas and the Jan 11, 2004 contest vs Chicago (Sakic had a single assist in each game), with the jersey photo-matched to the Jan 10th game. A label with attached “54” size fly tag is affixed to the collar, with CCM and NHL crests over the reverse neckline and bottom hem respectively. Featuring an attractive Avalanche team crest with embroidered detailing, the V-neck sweater has “19” sewn to the sleeves and verso in textured triple-twill, with matching alternate crests over each shoulder. The “Hockey Fights Cancer” crest resides over the right breast. The dual-clasp fight strap is intact. Sakic has signed the reverse “1” in silver marker, with the signature a bit weak but displaying beautifully. There is heavy staining over the front and sleeves along with a puck and stick marks, with Getty Image #53080090 (January 10, 2004) showing the loose thread on the middle of the left edge of the "1" on the right sleeve, while Getty Image #53080039 (January 10, 2004) shows the exact placement of a pair of white threads spots on the lower right side hem seam, and finally, Getty Image #53080092 (January 10, 2004) is showing the loose thread on the bottom left edge of the "9" on the right sleeve. We should further note that staining on the jersey does not show up in any of the photos from the Jan 10th game, and while we could not locate images from the Jan 11th match, a photo from January 22, 2004 shows Sakic wearing a jersey with similar staining pattern (Getty Images #50906608). A MeiGray patch is affixed to the inside hem – a patch only Sakic as captain wore for these two games, and according to the MeiGray population report, the jersey is a "White Hockey Fights Cancer - Worn 1/10/04 and 1/11/04".
