Sports Illustrated’s famous landmark inaugural issue and its follow-up are available here and offer reading entertainment galore. The August 16, 1954 "First Issue" also has mesmerizing images of 1954 Topps baseball cards, both front and back, making for an awesome three-page foldout spread. Williams, Mays, Snider and Jackie Robinson highlight the 27 "cards" on paper stock, with some light bends but no conventional creases to report. We rate the thick 144-page magazine as an attractive VG example, with some light wear along the (fully intact) spine, a couple of small creases near/in the spine and a light four-inch vertical/diagonal cover crease rising up from “25 CENTS” to reach the right edge all noteworthy but not detracting from the beauty of the classic cover shot of Eddie Mathews. The accompanying second issue is in lesser condition, with front cover edge chipping and a small tear, small rips in the spine, spine wear (half-inch split at the top) and a rather rough back cover (scrapes/scuffs/scratches) among its flaws but the all-Yankees baseball card-like insert/spread starring Yogi, Whitey and the Mick is a treat to check out, despite some bends and a few creases. A fabulous trip back in time, complemented by splendid eye candy, is what you’re in for when these arrive.
