Going undefeated throughout the season after losing their opening game to Florida, the Miami Hurricanes were invited to the Orange Bowl in 1983 against top-ranked Nebraska. Denying a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter, the Hurricanes upset the Cornhuskers 31-30, and climbed through the final polls to be named national champions. This 1983 Miami Hurricanes Orange Bowl NCAA championship ring was presented to an unknown individual named Henry. The basic version of the school ring, with the availability to upgrade to a 10K gold specimen for additional cost (a matching style ring in 10K gold owned by longtime Hurricanes broadcaster Sonny Hirsch has sold previously at auction), this ring is size 10 1/2 with an approx weight of 30 grams. Featuring a large zirconia in a diamond-shaped setting over a red stone on the tableau, "Miami 1983 National Champions" in slanted raised letters encircles the bezel. The right shank has an enamel school logo with "Henry" above and the season record of "11-1" below, while the left sports "Hurricanes" above along with the score from the Orange Bowl below. The inner band is stamped "HJ" (Herff Jones) and "ULT". Showing heavy wear from use, there are scratches throughout along with small dings to edges, with additional wear to the material over the outer band.
