Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022

The winner of the Red Tilson Trophy in junior for his better than a-point-a-game performance throughout the 1956-57 OHA season with his home-province Toronto St. Michael's Majors, Frank Mahovlich signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1957 and earned the Calder Memorial in 1958. The Big M would spend parts of a dozen seasons with the blue and white, followed by seasons in Detroit, and would conclude his NHL tenure with the mighty Montreal Canadiens. Saying goodbye to the hockey world in 1978 after a quartet of seasons in the WHA, Mahovlich was a six-time Stanley Cup champion, and was selected for literally every All-Star contest throughout his career, with enshrinement to the HOF occurring in 1981.
Worn while a current Stanley Cup champion, we have a photo-matched Canadiens alternate captain’s jersey donned by Mahovlich in 1971-72, a season that witnessed a career-high 96-points. Wilson labeling is affixed to the collar, with the vintage durene garment measuring-out to roughly a size 54. Styled with the sport’s most recognizable team crest in layered tackle twill, “27” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in matching material. The jersey also sports an intact garter-style fight strap. Exhibiting nice game-use, there is wear to the material including a pair of small holes on the lower left sleeve, with a bit of staining encompassing the collar. There is also pilling in areas including the interior, with a single team repair just above the front hem. We should also note that the alternate’s “A” has been crudely affixed – with a few areas where the stitching has let go, with this also visible at the middle of the reverse “2”. A February 1, 1972 digital color image has been matched to; the perfect placement of the team crest in correlation to the white and blue striping; the positioning of the "7" on the right sleeve which is lightly angled at the top edge; the positioning of the number "2" on the left sleeve which also exhibits the small white thread on the top area of the lower blue outline; the placement of the alternate captain's "A". Additionally, an undated black and white image has been matched to the perfect placement of the team crest in correlation with the white and blue striping, and to the placement of the alternate captain's "A". Originating from Frank Mahovlich’s personal collection, his signed LOA will accompany this vintage Habs treasure.
