Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
The NHL shutout king upon his untimely death in the spring of 1970, Terry Sawchuk remains one of the greatest goaltenders in history, and was the #1 ranked netminder on The Hockey News' list of the 100 Greatest Hockey Players (9th overall). This stick was used by the icon during the early-1960s with the Detroit Red Wings. A Northland Pro model with “Sawchuck” and his preferred lie of “12” stamped to the upper shaft, additional stamps from the Red Wings’ supplier Olympic grace each side of the shaft. The original black-over-white tape on the blade, black tape over the upper paddle and white-over-black on the knob is intact, with the top edges of the paddle shaved – all proper traits on Sawchuk gamers. Heavier game-use is exhibited, with wear to the reverse blade including small rips to the tape from contact with Sawchuk’s skate tips, with additional marks and wear to the paddle and shaft including small areas of red paint transfer. There is also cracking beneath the paddle and blade tape, with the stick remaining solid. Jack Stewart, Howie Glover, Dennis Riggin, Larry Jeffrey and one other that appears to be Claude LaForge have added pencil signatures.
