Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Hockey’s “iron man”, previously setting an NHL record for consecutive games played at 914, Gary Unger began his legendary streak of unbroken games on Feb 24, 1968 during his rookie season, with the streak concluding on Dec 21, 1979. Four teams would be represented throughout the streak including Toronto, and we offer a stick used by Unger during his rookie campaign team-signed by 18 members of the 1967-68 Toronto Maple Leafs; current holders of the Stanley Cup. A CCM Custom Pro model with “17” stamped to the upper shaft, the original white tape remains on the blade and knob. Exhibiting heavy game-use with numerous puck marks to the lower shaft and blade, there is also a crack at the heel, with the stick remaining completely solid. All 18 have signed one side of the shaft, mostly in blue ballpoint, including HOFers Horton (clean example with no issues), Pulford, Keon, Mahovlich, Pronovost, Stanley, Bower and George Armstrong, along with Ellis, Oliver, Hillman, Carelton, Rupp, Pelyk, two trainers and a few others. The majority of the signatures remain dark and display beautifully.
