One of the most fearsome enforcers of the era, Darren McCarty was an on-ice police officer and fan favourite in Detroit for 13 of his 15 NHL seasons. Having the best seasons of his career in the late 90’s with the Wings, McCarty was known for his ability to come in at clutch moments as well as his propensity to chuck fists, most famously during “Fight Night at the Joe” on March 26th, 1997 against the Colorado Avalanche, in a moment that is largely considered to be what broke the Stanley Cup curse against the Red Wings. Presented here is a pair of signed skates worn by McCarty during the late-1990s/early-2000s, with these specific types of models worn in both 1999-00 and 2000-01. Graf Supra 703 Top Light models measuring-in at approx size 10.5 based on the size of the Tuuk Plus blade holders, “McCarty” decals are affixed to each underside boot along with handwritten notations (worn away on the right skate). The pair show light game-use with marks visible along with additional marks and cuts to the blade holders, with pilling to the felt tongues from contact with his Red Wings socks. There is also tape residue to the left skate’s blade, with McCarty signing the inside section of the blade holder on the left skate in black marker, with a portion of the original team store price tag affixed to the tendon guard on the left skate. There is also a Hockeytown hologram affixed. Getty Image #160988661 shows McCarty wearing the exact same model of skates during a game against the Colorado Avalanche during the 1999-2000 season, while Getty Image #646328 shows these same types of models being worn in 2000-01 vs Columbus. An 8” x 10” photo signed by McCarty will accompany, along with a COA from the Red Wings for the skates.
