Affectionately known as the “Old Red Barn” in Detroit sports lore, the Olympia stood proudly on Grand River Avenue in Motown from 1927 when it opened, to 1979 when it closed for good, and finally saw the wrecking ball in 1986. Home to the Red Wings for 52 years, the Olympia witnessed perhaps the greatest era of NHL hockey during the Original Six era, with countless famed players that pulled the winged wheel sweater over their heads on a nightly basis, such as Howe, Kelly, Lindsay and Hall just to name a few. Offered here is a striking piece that carries the namesake of the famed Olympia as it includes both 11” x 14” interior and exterior shots of the former Red Wings home. First, the bottom photo is signed by 22 former Red Wings legends in blue marker including deceased HOFers Howe, Kelly, Pronovost, Lindsay, Abel, Bathgate, Gadsby, Delvecchio, Arbour and Tommy Ivan, along with fellow enshrinees Hall, Ullman, Giacomin, Dionne, and Frank Mahovlich, with Grant, Leswick, Collins, Pavelich, Dineen and Johnny Wilson rounding out the group. The upper photo pictures the exterior of the Olympia, with a plaque placed between, with the pair double-matted and framed to full dimensions of 21 ½” x 33 ½”.
