Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
Making a comeback with the Houston Aeros of the newly minted World Hockey Association to play with his sons Mark and Marty, Gordie Howe would lead the emergence of big time hockey in "The Lone Star" state and win a pair of AVCO Cup championships with Houston in 1974 and 1975. Ending his WHA tenure with the New England Whalers and finding himself back in the National Hockey League at the start of the 1979-80 season, the man dubbed "Mr. Hockey" would play a total of 419 games in the WHA, posting 508 points over that time. Offered here, we present this team-issued Houston Aeros Gordie Howe jersey that dates to circa the 1974-75 season. A heavyweight durene construction offering made by Rawlings, a brand label displaying a size "48" designation is affixed to the inner collar while the interior of the jersey is void of a fight strap. A real team issued jersey made up by the club that was never intended to be worn by Howe in game and matching others like it that have come to market, these jerseys are believed to have been made for marketing purposes and possibly as backups for Howe also. Decorated over the front of the jersey with "Aeros" running diagonally down the chest from right-to-left in single layer white tackle twill letters, single layer white tackle twill stars appear atop of both shoulders also while the alternate captain's "A" has been added over the left breast. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Howe's familiar/iconic number "9" in single layer white tackle twill numbers, "Gordie Howe" is spelt out in single layer white tackle twill letters across the affixed blue twill nameplate at the top of the reverse. Of note, the jersey shows evidence of a former shorter nameplate on the interior and the current nameplate that is affixed is NOT a style/font of nameplate used by the Aeros while Howe was playing there, indicating that its likely a modern replacement. Signed by Howe through the "9" on the reverse with a blue marker ink signature that displays with some bleeding, Howe has added his famed "Mr. Hockey" moniker below in matching ink while an inscription above reads "To My Friend Felix, Kindest regards and Wishes". Remaining in overall excellent condition with no unsightly flaws or wear other than a small mark on the right sleeve, the jersey comes accompanied by a trio of Howe signed photos, including one (1) of him signing the jersey that is being offered and two (2) of him actually wearing the jersey and stood beside the piece's former owner.
