Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
The scrawny rookie known for eating fast food at the start of his NHL career(!) and who heroically backstopped the Montreal Canadiens to the franchise’s 23rd Stanley Cup championship in the spring of 1986, Patrick Roy likely seemed like an appropriate/obvious choice to the deciders at O-Pee-Chee to appear on the company’s ’86-87 hockey card display boxes. With seemingly never enough supply to meet demand, the pictured Roy rookie card is the likes of which you’ll be hoping for if you decide to go searching through some or all of the 48 packs contained within…after winning the bidding, of course. They’re seven-card affairs and have been guaranteed as not having been searched by unopen specialist Baseball Card Exchange. BBCE’s shrink wrap envelops the box and affixed to the underside are the company’s labels and certification number. Mario Lemieux second-year cards are also possible, while guaranteed is a Mario box bottom card, joined by those of McDonald, Nicholls and Ridley, with an image of the second-year Mario on a side panel – cool. Light handling/wear is to note, most of it on the bottom of the box (corners/edges), with a less-than-an-inch diagonal crease extending from a corner into the Lemieux card, while the jagged die-cut section above the image of Roy has been pushed-in/popped, with a small crease nearby and a little tear over by the right edge. Never mind, you’ll be focusing on Patrick while wondering whether there’s one….or two high grade Roy rookies inside – it’s not often that a set’s most coveted card appears on the display box – you gotta love ’86-87 boxes – good luck with this infrequently offered jackpot.
