Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Tantalizing to fans and pursuers of both unopened material and high grade cards this thought-provoking box of 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee hockey card wax packs will be, with the booty of packs recently inspected and certified unopened by the experts at Baseball Card Exchange. Collectors were exchanging 20 cents back in the day for a 12-card pack, with 48 packs comprising a complete wax box. The key cards over the years have been rookie cards of Hall of Famers Mark Messier, Ray Bourque and Mike Gartner, with Wayne Gretzky featured on his second-year card and five others. What a time it was, with Gretz and Mess beginning to really wow the fans in Edmonton, their talent and pizazz later helping render the Oilers hockey’s most exciting and prolific team. The excitement of discovering high grade star and rookie cards within this splendid brick may entice serious hobbyists, along with those who prefer admiring older unopened packs – the possibilities are numerous. Creasing and a little tear are to report in the upper left quadrant of the box top, with minor color loss also to note. A quarter-inch piercing in the front panel and a small tear in the back panel (near the top edge where it meets the 20-cent indicator) are also noteworthy, as is the corner/edge wear on the bottom of the box. That’s where BBCE’s identifying label is affixed. Good luck with this tempting and captivating jackpot.
