Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
One of the last times in history a major international hockey tournament was hosted outdoors, harkening back to the sports modest roots, the 1961 IIHF World Championships was the 28th edition of the prestigious tournament, with Team Canada represented by British Columbia’s Trail Smoke Eaters. The Canadians would go undefeated through eight games, and claim the nations last gold medal for 33 years. Originating from his personal collection, we have the 1961 IIHF World Hockey Championships trophy that was presented to player Michel Lagace by Fiat, who possibly served as a sponsor. At 4 ½” inches in height, the mini trophy bowl sits over a small blond wooden base, with a metal plaque affixed with “Coppa Fiat" above, and "Mondiali Hockey Ju Ghiaccio" (Ice Hockey World Cup) and "Ginevra - Losanna" (Geneva – Lausanne) below. The trophy exhibits wear throughout to both the bowl and base, with additional wear over the engraved plaque, with the left side somewhat loose. An 8” x 10” copy of an original wire photo will accompany, along with an LOA from the Michel Lagace family.
