The 28th edition of the tournament, taking place in Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland from March 1st to the 12th, the 1961 IIHF World Championships featured 20 nations competing in three groups, with Canada represented by British Columbia’s Junior A club, the Trail Smoke Eaters. Going undefeated, Team Canada would take home the gold, with this the last championship for the mighty maple leaf for 33 years. We have the original gold medal that was presented to the Trail Eaters Michel Lagace. A classic design of a goaltender minding his net with “1961” below graces the obverse of this attractive medal, encompassed by the words “Championnat du Monde” and “World Championships”, with the artist signing. The reverse shows the IIHF logo with “International Ice Hockey Federation” in English and French, along with “1er” stamped. At 2” in diameter, the medal has been encased in lucite at some point, with the obverse appearing clean with no issues, while the reverse sports a couple large grooves/scratches. There is also wear to the lucite including marks and scratches. Originating from his personal collection, an LOA from the Michel Lagace family will accompany.
