Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022

Featuring the 20 greatest hockey nations competing for global bragging rights, the 1961 IIHF World Championships was the 28th edition of the tournament, taking place in Geneva and Lausanne, Switzerland from March 1st to the 12th. With nations competing in three groups, Canada was represented by British Columbia’s Junior A club the Trail Smoke Eaters, who went undefeated, taking home the gold, with this the last championship for the mighty maple leaf for 33 years. Ready to augment any vintage international or patriotic Canadian collection, we offer the Team Canada sweater worn at the tournament by Michel Lagace. With no labeling affixed to the collar, the tie-neck wool sports a Sparling label from the Vancouver retailer attached to the inside left seam, with the jersey measuring-out to roughly a size 46. Featuring a vintage-style maple leaf team crest in tackle twill with “Canada” in single twill arching above, “5” is sewn to the right sleeve and verso in matching material, with an embroidered “Trail” crest over the left sleeve. Surviving in absolutely gorgeous condition, with the colouration to the fabric remaining bright, there are no obtrusive marks or stains, with a pair of very small holes over the front including beneath the “N” of “Canada”, with a few additional small holes and material pulls to the right sleeve/elbow section. Hailing from his personal collection, an LOA from the Lagace family will accompany this spellbinding wool treasure along with a modern copy of an 8” x 10” photo showing Lagace wearing this sweater.
