Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Important in the development of three of the four major North American sports, Canada has been instrumental in the evolution of Hockey – with the nation inventing the modern game, football – as the continent witnessed the sport evolve from English Rugby played in our nation, and basketball – with it’s inventor James Naismith born in The Great White North. Naismith is an inaugural member of both the Basketball Hall of Fame (1959), which bears his name, and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame (2006), and we offer a framed display with an envelope addressed in his own hand that was sent to his wife in 1936. The founding father of basketball addressed the envelope in black fountain pen, writing, “Mrs. James Naismith” with the address below, effectively providing a nice Naismith signature about four inches long. The Cunard White Star envelope is 3 3/4" x 5 5/8”, with a “Sep. 1 1936 New York, N.Y.” postmark and a “Paquebot” stamp. A tear on the left side of the envelope does not affect Naismith’s handwriting or the overall display quality, with an 8” x 10” photo double-matted over the left, and a plaque listing the particulars at the base. Framed to full dimensions of approx 19 ½” x 25”, the display is ready for your favourite wall.
