A 396-card effort in 1984-85 was followed by a 264-card offering the following season by O-Pee-Chee, with the rookie cards of some legends showcased in the duo. The earlier set includes mostly NM to MINT cards, with however centering and minor corner/edge issues sending Steve Yzerman’s RC to EX-MT, while a touched corner is spotted on Doug Gilmour, Cam Neely and Pat Lafontaine rookies (all NM), with that of Chris Chelios making it to NM-MT. Ten different cards of Wayne Gretzky, (his regular #243 issue is but EX+ with a corner ding) are also notable, with half a dozen wrinkled cards exiting the factory with the production flaw and the last (checklist) card exhibiting a couple of creases. Both sets were presented to us as being complete and are assumed to be, with Mario Lemieux’s important rookie card a definite condition exception in the stack of ’85-86s, with dings at three corners and wear at the other contributing to our VG verdict. A small crease and corner dings render Mario’s Rookie Scoring Leaders entry VG as well, but an Al MacInnis RC (EX-MT) is like most of the remainder; in the EX-MT to NM-MT range, with some better/worse. An often-seen curvature to the ’85-86 cards, (with the exception of Super Mario), is also to note. Considered classics be collectors of a certain age are issues from the ‘80s, with a double dose available here to rectify your yearning.
