Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/31/2022
Rookie cards of Mark Messier (EX) and Ray Bourque (VG) and Wayne Gretzky’s second-year card (VG) are the key elements of a 1980-81 O-Pee-Chee set that leads chronologically here, with a majority looking to be close to the Messier RC (EX vicinity) and better examples showing up intermittently. The four offered sets are assumed to be complete, with plenty of touched corners spotted in an ’81-82 assembly denying us a “high grade” description, although EX-MT-and-better rookies and other entries do contribute. A curvature, often observed with ’81-82s, is also noteworthy. A Paul Coffey rookie admittedly has an atrocious cut job but also EX+ characteristics, while Kurri RC and 106-Gretzky are EX-MT or very close. An ’82-83 gathering, like the previous ones, is hampered not by creases but corner touches, with overall similar or actually a tad lower condition to report. A slight curvature segues into a more pronounced curvature among an ’83-84 set but it features the most NM-and-higher representatives, with Pelle Lindbergh (NM) and Scott Stevens (NM+) rookies amid them. Lots of Gretzky appearances and lots of cards for you to sift through upon securing close to half a decade of OPC hockey cards – it’s all about the puck! – check out our images of the most important components.
